The secret to successful teams, and how to unlock potential

I’ve spent over 15 years working with teams across rural and agribusiness industries, and one thing has always fascinated me: how people work together - or don’t! Why do some teams just click, while others struggle with miscommunication, misunderstandings, or friction?

That curiosity led me on a journey to explore DiSC, a tool I’d seen transform the way teams communicate, collaborate, and get results - including my own. Recently, I completed my Everything DiSC® certification through Wiley and Integro - four weeks of intensive, immersive training that combined deep dives into theory, practical exercises, facilitation practice, and a final exam to ensure mastery. It was challenging, but incredibly rewarding and I'm excited to as this facilitated training to our AgCentric service offering.

Understanding DiSC

DiSC is a personal assessment tool rooted in psychological theory, developed over 50 years ago and widely adopted in organisations around the world. It’s designed to help individuals understand their behavioural styles and how these influence communication, teamwork, and productivity.

The model is built on four core dimensions:

D – Dominance: Results-oriented, confident, and decisive

i – Influence: Enthusiastic, persuasive, and socially driven

S – Steadiness: Supportive, dependable, and collaborative

C – Conscientiousness: Analytical, precise, and quality-focused

DiSC isn’t about labeling people - it’s about recognising differences, leveraging strengths, and creating strategies for teams to work more effectively together.

How does your team interact?

  • Are there recurring misunderstandings or tension that slow progress?

  • Do some team members dominate conversations while others stay silent?

  • Are projects sometimes delayed because people aren’t communicating in a way that others understand?

  • Could your team achieve more if everyone understood each other’s strengths and tendencies?

These are exactly the challenges DiSC can help address. By giving teams a shared language for behaviour, DiSC training encourages empathy, trust, and more effective collaboration.

Why I'm excited about DiSC

Completing the certification was not just about passing an exam for me - it was about gaining tools so that I can genuinely help teams communicate better, collaborate more effectively, and have a bigger impact together. It's important to me that the Agricultural workforce enjoys their profession and the company they keep at work. It matters to the overall ability to attract top talent to the sector and maintain a positive perception of a career in agriculture. This is how I see myself contributing to this mission.

We spend about 1/3 of our lives at work - that's a significant amount (!) - it makes sense that we would actively work towards having succesful team interactions and workplace satisfaction. I’m looking forward to applying these insights to guide teams in practical ways, from improving daily interactions to tackling big projects with clarity and cohesion.
